Biology

Why did you choose to study Biology A Level?

I enjoyed Biology at GCSE, so I wanted to continue at A Level. I enjoyed the whole course particularly learning about DNA and homeostasis.  The teaching has been brilliant, if you don’t understand something you can ask for help and they will go through it again and again until you get it. I look forward to Biology every day and get excited when I see it on my timetable. The Biology field trip helped a lot with understanding theory. We went to Wales to carry out experiments in different environments. We spent time at university halls and got to use the lecture hall to go through what we had learnt that day and how you can use it in exams. It gave me a good understanding of parts of the A Level exam specification and I think missing out on the trip would have been very detrimental.

How will you use your Biology A Level?

I am studying Biology at university because I enjoy it so much and I want to learn more and study it in greater depth. Biology includes some Maths which I also enjoy.  I’m not sure what career I want to get into yet, but I want to continue doing what I enjoy. I think the Biology degree course content looks interesting and there are a few field trips you get to go on which I am excited about.

What advice would give to a student considering taking A Level Biology?

If you enjoy Biology at GCSE, then I would say take it at A Level. You go through what you’ve already learned in GCSE but in much greater depth. I took part in the Biology Olympiad, which was a good experience because you learn things you don’t do as part of A Level. I stayed on at The Blue Coat Sixth Form because I had enjoyed my time at the lower school and knew the teachers, and I didn’t see any reason to change that. The Biology teachers are so experienced and have great knowledge, I felt confident asking them questions and knew I could always go to them for support.
