I chose History at A Level because it is something I have always been interested in as a child. I’ve always enjoyed visiting museums and sites of historical interest when I have been on holiday or having days out with my family. I am fascinated by the way history evolves or goes through cycles. Understanding the historical context and the way things change over time has also helped me to understand my other A Levels in Politics and English Literature in greater depth and in a wider context. History is a subject which allows you to demonstrate your analytical and communication skills, and A Level History is a qualification that can lead on to so many different courses at university as well as career choices.
I have taken part in local archeological digs around Saddleworth searching for ancient Roman artifacts. Learning about how politics, philosophy, religion, literature, and culture have developed from ancient times and how society has grown fascinates me. My interest in ancient civilisations has increased over the years. I started watching videos and programmes about ancient history a few years ago and all these things have inspired me to want to study the subject after my A Levels.
I have worked in the archives in Oldham researching historical documents which was fascinating. I took part in a Sheffield University History competition writing about what it was like to be a Roman. I also joined the debate club in school, and I always tried to bring a historical perspective to the debates which I really enjoyed doing.
A Level History covers a wide range of issues from the Stuart kings, westward expansion in the USA and the civil rights movement of the 19th and 20th century. The variety of topics is one of the things that makes the subject so enjoyable to study. If you want to study an A Level which is like doing an enjoyable fulfilling hobby, helps you understand other subjects in more depth, and which can connect with your other studies, then History is good choice. It is also an academic A Level subject which is highly valued.
