I studied Geography at GCSE. I really enjoy the human geography issues such as international relations and the impact of organisations and business on the natural world. The Geography A Level teachers at Blue Coat are really engaging in lessons which makes learning enjoyable. Knowing how enthusiastic and supportive the teachers are helped me make the decision to study my A Levels at Blue Coat. I like some geography topics more than others, but I still give maximum effort to all the different areas of the subject, and I can always ask my teacher for support with any aspects I find more difficult.
I am studying a Geography degree at university because I have enjoyed the A Level so much. At university the flexible course options allow you to choose the geography topics which most interested you. Geography is a subject which employers and organisations value highly because of the different skills needed to do well such as the analytical understanding of issues from both a social science and natural science perspective. In a world where climate change, conflict resulting in migration and man-made pollution threaten all areas of human activity, studying Geography is more relevant than ever.
Keep up to date with the news and current events and learn about threats such as natural disasters and disease. I would recommend reading a book called ‘Prisoners of Geography’. It’s about the history of different nations and how borders and landforms have shaped the way world is now. I would also recommend learning about ‘net zero’ and sustainability. For my work shadowing I secured a place at Manchester City FC in the sustainability department. It was really interesting and useful because I got to see management strategies to lower carbon output such as planting trees around the campus and the local area to combat pollution and climate change. The club is aiming to be net zero by 2030.
