I thought I wanted to study medicine in the future and so chose subjects I thought I needed to get into that career. As I was studying my A Levels I realised my real interest and ambition was to study and have a career in robotics and mechatronic engineering. When it came to applying to university, I looked for engineering courses, which would accept my A Level choices. If I had to choose my A Level courses again I would in hindsight, have chosen Physics or Product Design or both which are more closely related to the course I’ll be doing at university.
I looked into the course and the university itself and decided it was exactly what I wanted to do. Some universities require Physics for Mechatronics and Robotics courses, but Leeds just needed Maths. There are so many opportunities in so many different fields especially if I go down the robotics or AI route. Aeronautics, healthcare, environmental industries, business, the car industry, so many different fields you can consider. I am most interested in working in auto engineering with cutting edge technology.
If you have a real interest in a subject or career and you’re ambitious choose the subjects you enjoy and you’re passionate about. I had done a digital coding course in Manchester when I was 16 which I really enjoyed. I also really enjoyed Engineering GCSE but then I chose A Levels which were right for medicine. I would have taken different A Levels if I had gone with what I really wanted to do but fortunately it has still all worked out well and I can study and work in the field I want in the future. Maths and Physics are the best choices if you think you might want to work in engineering.
