English Literature

Why did you choose to study A Level English Literature at Blue Coat?

Studying A Level English Literature was directly related to my ambition to study Law at University. It has helped me develop my ability to analyse complex texts, construct clear and persuasive arguments, and think critically from different perspectives. The skills I’ve gained from English Literature, such as interpreting meaning, evaluating evidence, and articulating ideas effectively, are directly transferable to the study and practice of law. Many universities that offer law courses recommend a study of English literature as the skills learnt directly correlate to the necessary skills needed to succeed in the field of law. Studying A Levels at Blue Coat gave me the opportunity to complete a two-week work placement at a solicitor’s firm, from which I gained a valuable insight into the legal profession. I observed client meetings, assisted with legal research, and gained an understanding of how cases are handled from start to finish. I was able to see firsthand the importance of strong analytical and communication skill, many of which I have developed through studying A Level English Literature. I’ve also been able to participate in debate competitions whilst at Blue Coat where I’ve had to construct persuasive arguments and think quickly on my feet.

What advice would you give to a student thinking about studying English literature A Level?

I would advise students who are passionate about in-depth study, critical thinking, and examining other viewpoints and perspectives to study English literature. This subject challenges you to think critically, interact with difficult concepts, and express yourself clearly and precisely. These are skills that are extremely valuable for lots of university courses and careers. To improve your communication skills, I would advise anyone to study a variety of literature to gain depth in your analysis, actively engage in discussions, and regularly practise crafting coherent, fact-based arguments.

What are you hoping to do after your A Levels?

I’m aiming to pursue a career in law, due to my interest and passion about justice, critical thinking, and problem-solving. Law is a field that requires analytical skills, strong communication, and the ability to construct well-reasoned argument, all of which I enjoy. I am particularly interested in how law shapes society and how legal systems function to maintain order and protect rights.
