Media Studies

Why did you choose to study Media?

I studied Media at GCSE and enjoyed it. A Level Media Studies is similar, but more theory based. It’s tougher than GCSE and there is lot more terminology to learn and understand. You need to be strong at writing and you need to be creative. Media is integral to our future and studying it has really helped me understand contemporary life. The journalism topics were particularly interesting, learning about famous journalists such as Julian Assange. We also learned about things you can and can’t do in journalism such as phone hacking. I found it fascinating and useful to learn about different newspapers and their political leanings.

Why did you choose Blue Coat Sixth Form?

I decided to stay at Blue Coat for Sixth Form because it is all familiar to me. I didn’t want a big change, having to get to know new teachers and a new environment. I’ve still made lots of new friends with students from other schools. The teaching at Blue Coat is great and easy to follow. If I need help with coursework or preparing for exams I can go to my teachers, and I never feel embarrassed asking for help. Teachers encourage you to do lots of past papers and they will willingly mark them and give feedback to help you learn from mistakes.

What are you planning to do in the future?

Studying Media has shaped my future ambition and made me want to work in journalism. I changed my mind having studied A Level from thinking I wanted to work in film to wanting to work in journalism. I have been able to find my passion within media by learning different aspects of newspapers and journalism, films and advertising. I am planning to go to Salford University to study multimedia journalism. I went to the university open day and found out about the course and I’m excited to have been given an offer. Multimedia journalism means a mixture of different types of journalism on a range of types of publications.
