Chemistry

Unlock the Secrets of the Universe Through Chemistry

Discover how the atomic and molecular world shapes everything around us, from life to technology.

Chemistry is often referred to as the “Central Science” because it connects and underpins all other branches of science. By studying A-level Chemistry, you’ll explore the atomic and molecular structures that make up our world, linking ideas from fields like mathematics, physics, biology, and medicine. Whether it’s understanding the chemical reactions in the human body or the role of chemistry in environmental science and technology, this course is at the heart of scientific discovery.

You’ll study organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry while developing essential practical skills that are assessed throughout the course. Chemistry offers the perfect mix of theory and hands-on learning, providing you with the critical thinking and problem-solving skills that are valued in many industries.

Course Overview

Course Type:A-Level
Exam Board:OCR
Assessment100% Exam

38% of students who studied A Level Chemistry last year went on to attend Russell Group universities.

What You Will Learn About:

  • Atomic and Molecular Theory: Understand the building blocks of matter and how atoms and molecules interact to create the world around us.
  • Organic Chemistry: Explore the chemistry of carbon-based compounds and their applications in industries like pharmaceuticals and polymers.
  • Inorganic Chemistry: Study the properties and behaviours of non-carbon compounds, including metals, salts, and gases.
  • Physical Chemistry: Learn about the principles governing chemical reactions, including energy changes, rates of reaction, and chemical equilibria.

Course Content & Assessment

Organic Chemistry

Explore the chemistry of carbon-based molecules and how they react. By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Recognise and draw chemical structures
  • Predict and explain reactions that molecules undergo
  • Design synthetic routes to create specific chemical products
  • Explain reactions using mechanisms and understand how factors like isomerism complicate reactions

Inorganic Chemistry

Dive into the chemistry of elements, acids, and transition metals. You will learn to:

  • Describe electronic structures and explain how they affect structure, geometry, and properties of substances
  • Perform key calculations including moles and acid-base reactions
  • Understand how buffer solutions maintain pH balance

Physical Chemistry

Focus on the mathematical and analytical side of chemistry. By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Analyse and identify substances using techniques like NMR spectroscopy
  • Calculate rates of reaction and explain the factors that influence them
  • Understand dynamic equilibrium and how reversible reactions are controlled in industry

Assessment

Final exams: 3 written exam papers

Paper 1 – Periodic Table, Elements and Physical Chemistry. 100 marks, 135 minutes

Paper 2 – Synthesis and Analytical Techniques. 100 marks, 135 minutes

Paper 3 – Unified Chemistry. 70 marks, 90 minutes
