Course Content & Assessment

Component 1: Drama

Written Exam – 2 hours 15 minutes

Explore classic and modern plays, developing your understanding of character, theme, and context.

Section A – Shakespeare – Othello: Answer one essay question, incorporating ideas from wider critical reading
Section B – Other Drama – A Streetcar Named Desire

Component 2: Prose – Wuthering Heights and A Thousand Splendid Suns

Examination: 1 Hour 15 minutes

Analyse and compare prose texts in depth. One comparative essay question from a choice of two on your chosen theme.

Component 3: Poetry

Written Exam – 2 hours 15 minutes

Examine poetry from different periods, including modern works.

Section A – Post-2000 Poetry- Christina Rossetti: Write a comparative essay on an unseen modern poem and one poem from your studied contemporary text
Section B – Specified Poetry: Answer one essay question on a selected poetry anthology

Component 4: Non Examination Assessment

Conduct independent analysis and comparison of two texts – 2500-3000 words.

Extended comparative essay based on the reading of two texts. The Handmaid’s Tale and a second text of your own choosing.

Develop your research and writing skills
Explore links between texts, themes, and contexts
Produce a polished essay demonstrating critical thinking

Teaching

In English Literature, you will be encouraged to actively engage with the texts you study, preparing for lessons by reading the set novels, plays, and poetry.
