Economics

Why did you choose to study Economics A Level?

I chose Economics A Level because at high school I realised that my understanding of the real world and my knowledge of current affairs which influence our day-to-day lives was lacking. By choosing Economics, it would allow me to fill in those gaps and help me to understand what is going on in the world around us.

How will you use your Economics A Level?

I have chosen to study a degree at the London School of Economics in Financial Maths and Statistics. There has been a massive rise of AI and machine learning powered by a lot of programming, algorithms and statistics used for investment decisions. Being able to understand how mathematics fits into this growing area would massively benefit a career in financial management. This study would also benefit my understanding of trading specifically, there’s been a big rise in high frequency trading and black box trading, powered by algorithms created using statistical models. Although someone studying my degree would typically go into a quantitative finance role, I am attracted to more pure finance career roles for example investment banking or property. The skills that you learn in a degree like that will certainly be beneficial even in pure finance. With this degree you could go into a data science role or an academic teaching role or you could go into actual accounting.

What advice would you give to a student considering studying A Level Economics?

In Year 11 I asked what I can do during the summer to get prepared.  The book ‘Freakonomics’ was recommended to me as an entertaining introduction to A Level Economics.  It’s a great book which is funny, easy to read and highlights and explains economic theory in a really entertaining way.  But the biggest piece of advice I could give anyone thinking of studying A Level Economics is to read or listen to the news. If you read the news there is a good chance of you getting the best grade possible because you can use examples in your essays, which show you’re interested in what’s going on in the world.  Lastly, follow the advice of the teachers they have the experience and know what it takes to get a top grade.
